YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some from our article on what a raft of changes means for your personal finances in the new tax year . . . YOUR personal allowance may be increasing, but so are National Insurance and council tax. Every year, like clockwork, they rise for no reason. Then, on top of that, there are insurance taxes, fuel duty, business rates, VAT — the list is endless. N. K., Southampton. OUR tax system is too complex and, to some extent, it is similar to the U.S.’s attitude to personal wealth. They have the attitude that individuals are merely borrowing the state’s assets until such a time when the Government decides to take them back. D. D., Liverpool. THE system is too heavily weighted to the benefit of the Government and civil servants. The hard-working and honest people of this country are being treated as cash generators. Meanwhile, the Government idly spends our money. N. S., Oxford. I WONDER what would happen if the tax set-up was simplified? Would accountants riot in the streets? Perhaps the world would simply be a (slightly) better place. A. J., London. WE’RE overtaxed by an overcomplicated system while the Government wastes billions. Why can’t tax be collected on what we buy, rather than what we earn? For instance, we could abolish tax paid when you buy a car — big cars use more fuel. I. S., Exmouth, Devon. I HAVE always wondered how this country stays on its feet economically. Then I realised it’s the millions in loans that we all have to borrow to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Budgets are really just an adjustment to make sure the money keeps coming in. F.
