I thought it was all over, then we won

-

The amazing win by Manchester United over Psg in the Champions League last month reminded me of a certain evening in May 1999. We were on holiday at a caravan site on the Mosel river in germany. We were the only english people there and the whole site was full of Bayern Munich supporters. it was a balmy evening, very late and dark, and everyone was sitting outside under their awnings, drinking, laughing and listening to the UEFA Champions League Final between Bayern and United on a radio on a german station (before everyone had satellite dishes). We were losing 1-0 and a german win seemed inevitable. The rest of the caravan site was celebrating their team’s prowess in the match. ninety minutes came and we were in injury time. We thought that was it. There was a goal. Was it us? Yes! it was difficult to follow the commentary, but then — what was that? Another goal! it wasn’t clear what had happened, but a look outside answered our question — darkness everywhere. There wasn’t a flickering light to be seen and complete silence had descended over the whole site. in two minutes the site had gone from euphoria to dead silence. Was that the triple United had just won? What a night — one all our erstwhile caravan neighbours won’t forget. Maybe it will happen again . . .
