Farke foiled by smash-and-grab Royals

- By ADAM SHERGOLD at Carrow Road

ANDY RINOMHOTA scored his first Reading goal to earn an unlikely late point after his side had fallen victim to yet another late Norwich comeback. The 21-year-old midfielder’s pinpoint left-foot strike from the edge of the box in the 97th minute left Carrow Road deflated. Moments earlier, the ground was bouncing after a breathtaking turnaround, led by Ben Godfrey and Christoph Zimmermann, flipped the contest on its head. The draw should only delay Norwich’s Premier League return after three seasons away, but the point could be priceless for Reading in the scrap to avoid relegation. ‘We are not too addicted in looking at the table. We just need to win football matches and we should have won this match,’ Norwich manager Daniel Farke said. ‘Some of the older lads had tears in their eyes because they were so close to winning. We didn’t do much wrong today.’ Reading took the lead with their only first-half shot, Yakou Meite meeting Modou Barrow’s low cross to slam a rising shot past Tim Krul. Norwich laid siege to their goal after the break and the pressure told when Marco Stiepermann laid a pass to Godfrey, whose thunderbolt found the top corner with four minutes left. And the turnaround was complete two minutes later when captain Zimmermann headed in Kenny McLean’s cross. But Rinomhota provided a sting in the tail. Reading boss Jose Gomes said: ‘My players deserved the point because they bravely defended for so long against a team that will be in the Premier League.’
