PM’s on Welsh walking holiday (but not planning an election this time!)
THEY are the words that send panic through Westminster – Theresa May has gone on a walking holiday in Wales.
It was during such a trip in Snowdonia that Mrs May decided to call 2017’s snap general election... only to see her Commons majority wiped out.
Now, after another year and a half of wrangling over Brexit, Mrs May has headed for Wales once again. She and husband Philip set out on Saturday, and will return to her Berkshire constituency on Thursday.
However, Downing Street insisted yesterday that history would not repeat itself. Asked whether Mrs May was considering another election, her spokesman
replied: ‘No.’ Talks with Labour on breaking the Brexit deadlock will continue in her absence.
Business Secretary Greg Clark and his Labour shadow Rebecca Long-Bailey will look at services and consumer and workers’ rights. Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Sue Hayman will consider environmental protections, while Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and Sir Keir Starmer will consider security.
Meanwhile, Mrs May has ordered the Civil Service to continue preparing for the possibility of a No Deal Brexit.
