- By Jake Hur furt

FORMER Manchester United star Nicky Butt was arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday.

The 44-year-old, who is now head of the club’s youth academy, was in custody last night. He was arrested at 2pm yesterday after Greater Manchester Police were called to a report of a woman being assaulted.

The woman was injured in the incident but the cut to her hand was not serious enough to require a trip to the hospital.

Butt played as a midfielder for Manchester United, making 387 appearances between 1992 and 2004. He also earned 39 caps for England.

In 2016, he was appointed as head of the club’s academy where he is supposed to be a role model for the next generation of stars that he coaches.

Butt was part of a golden generation of young Manchester United talent nicknamed the ‘Class of 1992’, alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. During his career at Old Trafford, he won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a Champions League medal.

He moved to Newcastle United in 2004 for £2.5 million before ending his career playing in China. A year after retiring from playing, Butt returned to Manchester United as a coach.

Alongside other members of the Class of 92, he owns part of non-league side Salford City.

Butt, born in Gorton, Manchester, has been married since 2008 and has two children.

Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Police were called at 2pm on Tuesday, to reports that a woman had been assaulted.

‘The woman received a small cut to her hand and does not require hospital treatment. A 44–year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.’

It came as another former United star, Paul Scholes, was charged with misconduct by the FA over sports betting.
