MODERN LIVING

When leaving home and locking up, I very often find My neighbour doing just the same. It seems we’re of a mind To go and do our shopping, Or just have a change of scene. And paths may cross again when we Return from where we’ve been. I give a cheery wave, a smile ‘Hello there, how are you? Yes, isn’t it a lovely sky, Almost cobalt blue. The sun is bright, but oh, that wind Is strong and icy-cold. I don’t think I will stay out long . . . Must be getting old. I’m sure that I’ll be back by two, So, some time after that, Do pop round for a cuppa And we’ll have a proper chat.’ This conversation’s in my head It’s what I’d like to say, But reticence takes over, and We each go on our way.
