Cram’s BBC conundrum
STEVE CRAM may be forced to quit his post as the BBC’s lead commentator if he wants to become the new chairman of UK Athletics. Both Cram and the BBC have been silent on the 58-year-old former middle-distance star’s application for the post but insiders believe BBC bosses will tell him he will ‘have to make some big decisions’ if chosen to be the successor to Richard Bowker. According to the BBC’s editorial guidelines, such a conflict of interest is not permitted, raising the question of whether Cram would give up a BBC job that pays him several hundred thousand pounds a year to become a chairman, with an income of £40,000 per annum. Cram has high-level support for the role and is on a shortlist being considered by a UKA selection committee. He will be told this week if he has an interview.
