Scholes betting charge

- By MATT LAWTON and MIKE KEEGAN

PAUl ScHoleS has been charged by the FA with breaching betting rules while he was a co-owner and director at Salford city.

He could face a fine or even a ban after allegedly placing 140 bets between August 2015 and January this year.

The news comes just four weeks after Scholes resigned as manager of oldham Athletic following a tempestuous 31-day tenure.

Prior to that, he had avoided controversy. But during the 2014 World cup he worked as a columnist and tipster for a prominent bookmaker and an FA statement yesterday suggests he is an active gambler.

Scholes declined to comment last night and there was no word from BT Sport, who employ the 44-year-old as a pundit.

The FA statement read: ‘ Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to The FA’s Betting Rules. it is alleged he placed 140 bets on football matches, contrary to FA Rule e8, between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019. He has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the charge.’

Scholes (right) is part of United’s ‘ class of 92’ quintet along with Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, who took over Salford in

March 2014. At the time Salford were in Division one North of the Northern Premier league but after successive promotions are now pushing for the National league title. Scholes, who retired as a player in 2013, was briefly joint caretaker manager of the club with the now england women’s coach Phil Neville in 2015. He resigned as a Salford director in February to become oldham boss but retains a 10 per cent stake in the club. The FA have strict gambling rules, banning anyone involved in football to bet on matches — regardless of whether they involve clubs they are connected to. But insiders suggest this case does not compare in potential seriousness to that of liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, who was charged with a breach of betting rules in November 2018 and faces a hearing in the next few weeks. in April 2017, Joey Barton was banned for 18 months from competing in the sport at any level, having made 30 bets that included clubs that he was involved with at the time. For a breach of Rule e8, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry was suspended from football for four months, three months of which were suspended for two years.
