A-lister Anne: I drank so much my hangovers lasted 5 days... I had to give up for my son’s sake

SHE revealed she’d given up booze at the start of this year. But Anne Hathaway has now told just how tight a grip alcohol had on her – and how it affected her family.

The Hollywood star admitted to going on such heavy binges with her ‘drinking buddies’ that she was left with hangovers that went on for five days.

She told Tatler magazine: ‘My issue is I just love it. So. Much. But the way I do it makes me unavailable for my son.

‘My last hangover lasted for five days. I’d earned it: it was a day drinking session with friends that went into an evening birthday party with one of my drinking buddies.

‘I will never be that person who can nurse a glass of wine throughout an entire evening.’ She and her husband Adam Shulman, 38, have a three-yearold son, Jonathan, and she has vowed to be teetotal until he turns 18.

The Les Miserables star even joked that if it weren’t for her acting career, she could ‘ more likely’ have become an alcoholic.

When asked where she would be if she wasn’t an actress, Miss Hathaway jokingly replied: ‘In the gutter? I could have seen myself being a teacher. Or going into the military. Or being some kind of do-gooder with a death wish. But more likely than anything else I would have been an alcoholic.’

She also revealed that giving up being a vegan left her feeling so good that it was as if her brain ‘rebooted’. The actress said a fish dish in Iceland changed her view on veganism after years of dedication to the plantonly diet.

For fear of being embarrassed in the company of her Interstellar co- star Matt Damon, who ate reindeer, the star ordered salmon for the first time in years.

Miss Hathaway said: ‘We walk into a Michelin- star restaurant, and because Matt is the nicest guy he says, “I’ll just have whatever the chef wants to serve me.”

‘And my husband – who had just completed a year of veganism – says, “Me too.” I was like, “Sweetie, he’s having a reindeer carpaccio.”

‘So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow. So I asked, “Is your fish local?” And they said, “Do you see that fjord?” So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.’

Miss Hathaway is the latest celebrity to cut or eliminate their alcohol intake to improve their health. ITV Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid, 49, has been teetotal for around seven months after her doctor warned she had a high body mass index (BMI), and has since lost nearly two stone in body fat. ‘Seven months on my skin isn’t perfect but it’s clearer,’ she said recently. And so is my head. I am sleeping better. I don’t miss for a minute that feeling of fizzing in your body in the morning, which meant I couldn’t quite relax the day after a big night.’ Meanwhile, Kate Moss, 45, has also gone teetotal ‘80 per cent of the time’ and exchanged her hard-partying ways for green juices and gym time.
