Found, cockerel that flew from cathedral

- From Emine Sinmaz and Peter Allen in Paris

THE weathercock which perched at the top of Notre Dame’s spire has been ‘miraculously’ saved from the rubble.

The copper weathervane was believed to have been destroyed in the inferno. But France’s Ministry of Culture confirmed the rooster has been saved in what has been described as ‘an absolute miracle’.

‘It’s dented but can be restored,’ said a spokesman. Shocked crowds watched as the weathercock fell to the ground on Monday evening as the fire engulfed the cathedral. They feared the relics inside – one of St Denis, one of St Genevieve and one of the crown of thorns that it is believed Jesus Christ wore at the Crucifixion – were destroyed.

But members of the French Building Federation, who painstakingly excavated the rubble, made the heartwarming discovery yesterday.
