China growth steady
CHINA’ S economy expanded by a healthy 6.4pc in the first three months of 2019 – fuelling hopes for a pick-up in global growth.
The figures were better than economists expected and suggest the country is stabilising after a long slowdown last year.
It comes after Beijing slashed taxes and boosted lending to shore up performance. Mao Shengyong, of the national Bureau of Statistics, said the results were positive but said further changes are needed.
China is at loggerheads with US President donald Trump over trade, which has affected its exports.
Meanwhile, a record £76.6bn of Chinese currency was traded in London in the final three months of 2018.
