Shock semi shows it’s not about money

-

TOTTENHAM, the only Premier League club to have spent absolutely nothing in last summer’s transfer market, are Champions League semi-finalists and Manchester City are not. Let that sink in. This was a defining night for Spurs against a side who have racked up a net spend of more than £350million under Pep Guardiola. The night after Ajax shocked us all by beating a big spender in Juventus, who signed Cristiano Ronaldo in the hope of winning Europe’s elite competition, Tottenham did the same to City to seal a last-four clash with the Dutch side. It shows it’s not always about the money. Mauricio Pochettino gambled by playing a diamond formation and using two up top. He did not take his side to the Etihad Stadium to simply shut up shop, and for a while it looked like Kevin De Bruyne (left) had inspired City to victory. But Spurs took the risk, and got the reward. In the past, their lack of trophies has been a monkey on Pochettino’s back. ‘How can he be a good manager if he hasn’t won anything?’ Well, he was under immense pressure last night and emerged victorious. What a night this was. Spurs are now three games from winning the biggest trophy of them all. Incredible.
