Facebook bans the EDL

FACEBOOK has finally banned far-right groups such as the English Defence League and the British National Party for promoting hatred and violence.

The social network removed them from Facebook and Instagram, and key members of their leadership, such as former BNP leader Nick Griffin.

Jack Renshaw, the neo-Nazi who plotted to kill Labour MP Rosie Cooper while being investigated for grooming young boys, was also erased.

Facebook said: ‘Posts and other content which expresses praise or support for these figures and groups will also be banned. Our work against organised hate is ongoing.’

The site also took action against Britain First, Knights Templar International and the National Front.

Facebook was heavily criticised after footage of the New Zealand mosques massacre on March 15 was allowed to spread on its platforms afterwards.

Yvette Cooper, chairman of the home affairs select committee, said the move was ‘long overdue’.
