WHAT HAS HE GOT?
FAST developing with Championship experience, Reece James is on the right path. This young defender has been outstanding as he continues to advance as a forceful full back. Now at Wigan on loan, he has been used in the centre by manager Paul Cook as a tackling enforcer with the added responsibility of breaking forward when the opportunity arises. He certainly is tough. Square-shouldered, he has the profile of a middleweight boxer and his determination in a one-on-one encounter has a real punch. What I liked when I saw him recently in a difficult away game playing in a very average side was his determination to get on to his feet quickly after an accidental clash with his own team-mate. Rather than roll around and seek attention, he staggered to his feet as quickly as possible, denying himself the possibility of treatment which his colleague had requested. He has good drive, forcing his way past opponents and forging forwards to unleash powerful shots. Right-footed, he was quick to get in to challenges and it was clear he not only could anticipate but could also intercept with a defender’s mind set. He competes well in the air.
WHAT DOES HE NEED?
SOME of his forward passing was erratic on the day I saw him in a haphazard game. But then he is not a schemer type of player. He looks to have leadership qualities and he is brave enough to play longer passes. He did have a spell where his passing was wayward but I was told by regular watchers of Wigan that this is not a common downside but an isolated performance in that regard. To his credit, this issue did not stop him trying to play the occasional ‘risk’ ball. His drive and leadership should ensure he develops well enough to be another Chelsea sale.
