ZION CHURCH

It is in the eastern coastal city of Batticaloa and was founded in the 1970s. Simon Whitmarsh, a retired doctor from Wales, was cycling near Batticaloa when he saw ‘smoke billowing into the sky’. He said: ‘Then we saw the ambulances, people crying, and we were told to leave the area.’ At least 27 were killed.
