BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

You are West, declarer in 6 ♠ , against which North leads the ♦ A, then switches to the ♥ Q. Have you any hope of making the contract and, if so, how? Yes, you have a good chance of making. You have already lost the first trick, but you have learned that North has the

♦ K, and hearts headed by a sequence. If the sequence goes down as far as home and dry.

Win the second trick in dummy, draw trumps and cash the three top clubs.

Now, run off the rest of your trumps and you will get to a position where you have two small hearts and one trump left, while dummy has the ♥ A8 and

♦ Q. If North has the ♦ K and the ♥ J10, he will be squeezed when you play your last trump, and you will then make either the ♥ A-8 or ♥ A and ♦ Q.

This is a simple positional squeeze, for which the ingredients are a squeeze card (the last trump), a long menace (the ♥ A8), a short menace ( ♦ Q) and an entry card (a small heart).
