Whale of a time: Eco mob’s ‘die-in’ at museum

- By Jemma Buckley and George Odling

ECO-WARRIORS who have caused havoc across London yesterday staged a mass ‘die-in’ at the Natural History Museum.

Almost 300 climate change activists occupied the museum’s main Hintze Hall, dropping to the floor underneath a gigantic blue whale skeleton for 20 minutes.

A staggering 1,065 members of the eco mob have been arrested over the last week at demonstrations organised by Leftwing group Extinction Rebellion.

The group have tried to force the Government to cave to their demands – including a legally binding policy to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 – via the disruptive protest. They will lobby MPs today – their first day back in Parliament after the Easter break. Waterloo Bridge was reopened on Sunday after being occupied for a week. Demonstration sites at Oxford Street and Parliament Square were also cleared on Sunday, while a sanctioned protest continues at Marble Arch.

Olympic canoe slalom gold medallist Etienne Stott was arrested at Waterloo Bridge on Sunday evening, carried away by four officers as he shouted about the ‘ecological crisis’.

The Met had been heavily criticised for its failure to clear those causing havoc, but moved into action over the weekend.

In a six-hour operation involving hundreds of officers, they removed a bright pink boat at Oxford Circus, which had been bolted to the tarmac. Met Commissioner Cressida Dick has said the policing operation had been unlike any she had experienced in almost four decades, and called for the ‘miserable’ disruption to end.

‘Miserable disruption must come to an end’
