Is the medical profession sexist?

-

HOW pathetic can you get? Medical student Hannah Yard complains about a barrage of sexist abuse (Mail), which to me sounds more like banter: ‘She must be here to make the sandwiches’ and, ‘It was nice to finally have something to look at across the operating table.’ If being called ‘blondie’ and being advised to dye her hair brunette in order to be taken seriously reduced her to tears, how is she going to cope with the pressures of being a surgeon? Why didn’t Hannah just say: ‘OK, I’ll make the sandwiches today and you get to do them tomorrow’; and ‘Something nice to look at? Wish I could say the same.’ Most women are more than capable of any job they take on, but some snowflakes demand equality and then cry at the least little thing. They should man up.

Mrs C.M. COXON, Nottingham. IF SOMEONE had said such things as ‘good girl’ and ‘are you a student nurse?’ to my daughter, they would be looking at a court case. It takes a lot of money and a great deal of time to train a doctor. Hannah Yard, the young lady who listed the sexist remarks she encountered while training in a hospital, is obviously talented and I would urge her not to give in to this old boys’ network. The NHS needs young talent, not misogynistic geriatrics.
