THE letter about Lord Louis Mountbatten (Peterborough) brought back memories of my childhood. During World War II, I lived in Immingham on the south bank of the Humber. There was a busy dry dock and Lord Louis’s ship came in for repair. While it was being worked on, he played tennis at the local club. He rode a bicycle, dressed in tennis whites, racquet in hand. There was little traffic on the roads and we children used to play skipping and hopscotch across the road. Someone would see him cycling along and we would all stand aside and wave to him as he passed by, calling: ‘Hello, Lord Louis.’ We had no idea who he was, but we had been told his name. He always waved back and said: ‘Hello children.’ Then the hopscotch continued. The innocence of youth!
