In his debut column for Saga magazine, the University Challenge presenter says we’ve never had it so good. ‘We are probably the luckiest generation that ever lived,’ says the 68-year-old broadcaster. ‘Just look at the opportunities available to us. By their early 20s both my parents were wearing uniform and taking orders. They never had a youth of the kind we have all taken for granted. The average life expectancy in Britain is just over 80. Most of us who have reached 50 or beyond in our society have had a better life than we had any right to expect.’
