End this persecution

-

THE Sri Lanka attacks were another appalling example of terrorism targeting a place of worship, after the synagogue in Pittsburgh and mosques in Christchurch.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt is right to draw attention to the worldwide persecution of Christians (Mail), which is only just starting to get the attention it merits.

A hallmark of a democratic society is how it treats its minorities, including guaranteeing freedom of religion. Too many governments in Asia, Africa and the Middle East do not protect religious minorities, or worse, actively help persecute them.

Until we learn to be enriched by differences in religion, not threatened by them, this ugly and heart-breaking conflict will continue.

London SW1. COLUMNIST Peter Oborne was amazed that the BBC managed to report on the Notre Dame fire with-out mentioning religion, Catholicism, Christianity or any reference to what the cathedral was used for (Mail).

Sadly, the BBC is not alone. The Department for Education has removed Easter from its calendar and this has passed down to education authorities, which refer to it was the Bank Holiday or end-of-term break.

There was a full programme of football on Good Friday, which at one time was one of two days when players could say they would not play. Has putting profit before religion become standard for today’s society?
