New releases
GEORGE BENSON: Walking To New Orleans (Provogue) THE guitarist used his last LP, Inspiration, to pay tribute to Nat King Cole. This one honours two giants of rock ’n’ roll. With five songs apiece from Fats Domino and Chuck Berry, it’s a loose, feelgood affair supplemented by a brassy band. His sublime guitar work is well suited to the Berry standard Memphis, Tennessee, but he shines brightly on Domino’s I Hear You Knocking, too. LIZZO: Cuz I Love You (Atlantic) MELISSA Jefferson — aka Lizzo — wants to ‘change the world, one song at a time’. The brash Texan singer (and flautist) makes an ear-catching start on a debut mixing soul, hiphop and bags of attitude. Recent single Juice is the most infectious retro-dance number since Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk. There’s a Fifties doo-wop feel to Jerome and a funky, Prince-like spirit to Cry Baby.
