High St bounces back
The economy is showing signs of life as sales on the high Street bounce back.
According to the antiBrexit CBi, retail sales rose for the first time in five months in April, as the warm weather and easter boosted business.
it is the latest sign the economy is prospering following figures showing employment at a record high, wages rising at the fastest pace for a decade, and government borrowing at a 17-year low. Britain has defied warnings – including from the CBi – that the Brexit vote would send the economy into a tailspin.
Rain Newton-Smith, chief economist at the CBi, said: ‘ it’s encouraging to see retailers with more of a spring in their step.’
