MISSING...
FRED CHRISTIE, of Blaby, Leicestershire, is searching for the RAF buddies with whom he served in Kano, Nigeria, in 1961.
‘I joined the RAF aged 15 and, in December 1959, after 18 months of training at RAF Cosford, I was posted to RAF Ballykelly in Londonderry,’ he writes. ‘A year later, I was sent to Kano to join 11 other members of the communications team. My training pal, Tony O’Reilly, went to Cameroon.
‘We used Morse code to forward messages back and forth between the UK and RAF units in Lagos, Accra and Cameroon. The radio equipment and generators were in Bedford trucks. We erected our receiver, transmitter masts and aerials in scrub ground near Kano airport, where we encountered snakes, scorpions, beetles and very large rats.
‘After Nigeria, I spent four months in Malaya and served in the RAF until I was 55. The team at Kano included Sgt Lister, Flying Officer Hill, Cpl Morgan, Johnny Cocking, Terry Bloomfield, Tony (a Scouser) and Pat Curtis. It would be great to find any of these former RAF friends.’
