Andy ex-coach bids to oust shamed chief

- By MIKE DICKSON

ANDY MURRAY’S former coach Dani Vallverdu is believed to be among six candidates ready to stand against disgraced American Justin Gimelstob for a key role in men’s tennis. They have until Monday to enter the May 14 election to the ATP board, when Gimelstob’s position is up for renewal. This week the former player, 42, was given three years’ probation, 60 hours’ community service and ordered to undertake anger management therapy after pleading ‘no contest’ to a charge of assaulting a former friend at a Halloween party in Los Angeles. But Gimelstob, who has powerful allies such as ATP player council president Novak Djokovic, wants to continue in the role as player representative for the Americas region. The highly-respected Vallverdu, now coaching Grigor Dimitrov, is already the coaches’ representative on the player council. Wimbledon have stated that Gimelstob will not be invited to play in the veterans’ events this summer, but have stopped short of an outright ban. The US Open are ‘assessing’ whether to allow him to attend their tournament.
