How PM’s tragic niece lost fight with depression

-

THERESA May’s crusade to bolster mental health services follows the tragic death of a niece who took an overdose when she became depressed after suffering two miscarriages, it emerged yesterday.

Vikki McQuaid, 20, pictured, was found by her mother Cathy – sister of the Prime Minister’s husband, Philip – after leaving a note which read: ‘I’m sorry, it’s unbearable without children.’

An inquest heard that hours before her death in August 2013, Miss McQuaid, a student who was also Mrs May’s goddaughter, had tearfully told a friend she feared she could never have a baby.

Mrs May has never spoken publicly about her loss, but in January she announced a massive expansion of young people’s mental health care as the flagship policy of her long-term NHS plan. She has also appointed Jackie Doyle-Price as the UK’s first Minister for Suicide Prevention and pledged up to £1.8million to support The Samaritans’ 116123 helpline.
