HOW FARAH GOT CAUGHT UP IN A WEEK OF MADNESS
FARAH: WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON Farah raises his gripe at a press conference that he had a watch, £2,600 and two phones stolen while staying at Haile Gebrselassie’s hotel in Ethiopia. He criticised Gebrselassie for not doing more to help and shows reporters a text in which he tells Gebrselassie (right) that he will be raising the issue ahead of the marathon. GEBRSELASSIE: WEDNESDAY NIGHT Gebrselassie issues an angry response, accusing Farah of leaving an unpaid hotel bill, ‘disgraceful conduct, blackmail, and attacking a married athlete’, for which Gebrselassie claims only his intervention prevented police action. FARAH: WEDNESDAY NIGHT As part of a statement, Farah’s spokesperson says: ‘Mo is disappointed with this statement and the continued reluctance by the hotel and its owner to take responsibility for this robbery. Mo disputes all of these claims, which are an effort to distract from the situation, where members of hotel staff used a room key and stole
money and items from Mo’s room. Police reports confirm the incident and the hotel admitted responsibility and were in contact with Mo’s legal adviser’. GEBRSELASSIE: THURSDAY MORNING Gebrselassie says Farah ‘kicked and punched’ married couple Sisay Tsegaye and Dagmawit Kibru. Husband Sisay later plays down suggestions his wife was hit in the altercation. FARAH: THURSDAY MORNING As part of a statement, Farah’s spokesperson says: ‘As stated already Mo disputes Gebrselassie’s claims. There was an incident at the gym, at which Haile Gebrselassie was not present, but it was categorically not of Mo’s making.’ GEBRSELASSIE: THURSDAY EVENING Gebrselassie says his row with Farah started when he refused entry to his hotel to controversial coach Jama Aden, who was arrested in a doping raid in June 2016. It is unclear when this was but Gebrselassie says it was during his tenure as Ethiopia Athletics Federation president between November 2016 and November 2018. FARAH: THURSDAY EVENING Farah’s spokesperson says the claim is ‘utter nonsense’ and that Aden ‘has never trained Mo’. FARAH: YESTERDAY MORNING Farah finishes fifth in the London Marathon and dismisses Gebrselassie’s claim about Aden, saying he does not regret raising the issue of the theft.
