Why hasn’t BBC sent Packham packing?
AS ONE of the presenters of BBC’s Springwatch, isn’t Chris Packham supposed to be impartial? I’m just wondering, because it’s thanks in large part to his campaigning efforts that the government quango Natural England has decided to revoke its general licences that allowed farmers to shoot so-called ‘pest’ birds, such as rooks, crows and magpies.
As the Mail has argued, these creatures pose a real threat to other creatures, including smaller birds and vulnerable livestock such as ewes and lambs. The fact is, animals don’t operate according to a moral code, so it’s absurd to think that just being nice to crows will make them any less predatory.
Of course, no one wants to harm animals indiscriminately; but farmers, as custodians of the countryside Packham is so passionate about, should be allowed to do their jobs without being demonised by armchair naturalists who clearly don’t understand the fundamental laws of nature.
