BORN ON THIS DAY

JOSEPH HELLER (1923-1999). The American novelist is best known for Catch-22, which was inspired by his time with the U.S. Air Force, surviving 60 sorties. The book was going to be called Catch-11 (but was dismissed because of the film Ocean’s 11), then Catch-17 (rejected because of film Stalag 17), then Catch-14 (his publisher didn’t think it was a funny number). SANDY WOODWARD (1932-2013). The Cornish-born admiral led Britain’s task force in the 1982 Falklands War, described as ‘the most successful British naval expedition since World War II’. As he deployed his men, his brief was direct: ‘People will die, ships will be lost, that’s the deal. Go to it.’
