Our debt to America

-

tHE disrespect shown by Jeremy Corbyn and John Bercow to the U.s. President shows their ignorance and childishness.

Perhaps they could drag themselves away from the Westminster bubble to visit my part of the country.

First, they could go to the U.s. military cemetery at Coton to regard the lines of white crosses, each one an American who never made it home from World War ii, or study the long, white wall engraved with the names of those with no grave.

Across the Fens are the twin U.s. air bases of Mildenhall and Lakenheath, which inject millions of pounds into a rural economy.

they could then go for lunch at the Eagle in Cambridge, the ceiling of which bears the signatures of airmen, some RAF but mostly American, the majority of whom did not return.

on the way back to their boltholes, they could stop off at the imperial War Museum at Duxford. Walking up the slope towards the entrance of the American Air Museum are glass panels on which are etched all the aircraft lost.

We may not always like what Donald trump says or does, but we should show him respect as the leader of the U.s. and the guardian of those who gave their lives to help us in our time of need. BOB CHESHAM, Cambridge.
