FIRST DAY NERVES

I’m pinching and punching — It’s the first day of the month And I have to do it before midday Or I will look a chump. The rule is to pinch and punch someone Before it’s done to you So getting out there quickly Is what you have to do. I’ve carried out this ritual — Taught by my dear old dad From childhood through to adulthood — Now I pinch and punch like mad! If on this day I get up late I have a little panic — With so many people to greet this way It’s all a little manic. And sometimes if I’m caught out — And they get to me first My nerves are all of a jingle And I am fit to burst. But ask me for what purpose This ritual is done, I have to shrug my shoulders and say: ‘Absolutely none!’ Sheila Webb, Chesham, Bucks.
