Carbon footprint on menu
A PUB in the Lake District has become the first in Britain to show the carbon footprint of every item on its menu.
Sticklebarn, which is run by the National Trust, made the change as part of its pledge to be sustainable. Diners at the pub in Great Langdale, Cumbria, can consider the impact on the planet as they tuck in.
A plate of nachos with ropa vieja – slow roasted beef with chilli, sour cream and guacamole – creates 5.74kg of greenhouse gases, the equivalent of driving 14 miles in a car or charging a smartphone 732 times.
A slow roasted lamb burger with brioche and wedges produces 4.53kg, largely because of the methane released by sheep.
Food and farming campaigner Clare Oxborrow said: ‘For food that’s better for the planet and your health, it’s good to look out for the carbon, as well as the carbs. Meat and dairy have a particularly large environmental impact.’
