inVESTOrS pushed back at miner anglo american over the appointmen­t of a new director from brazil.

more than 26pc of votes cast at its annual general meeting opposed the election of marcelo bastos as a non-executive director.

The rebellion was led by indian billionair­e anil agarwal, boss of rival Vedanta resources, who owns more than 19pc of anglo. He wants anglo to have more representa­tion from South africa, where the company began and still mines.

The company has only one South african representa­tive on its 11-strong board at present. anglo chairman Stuart Chambers said the next executive it appoints will be from, or linked to, South africa.
