FuRTheR to the funny anecdotes about bananas, I had to tell you about my abiding memory. It was 1944, I was 14 and I worked with 20 other girls in an underground cashiers’ room at an oxford Street department store. one of my uncles, who was stationed in Gibraltar, arrived on leave, bringing with him a couple of bunches of bananas. We hadn’t seen a banana for five years and I was thrilled when he gave me two! Rather than keep them all to myself, I took them to work and shared them with my workmates, carefully cutting them up in slices so we all had a taste. It was a very special moment in a pretty bleak time and cheered us up no end.
