best known for playing Jesus of Nazareth in the Seventies TV mini-series, but Robert Powell has no regrets that the messianic role overshadowed his entire career.

‘ Every Catholic country shows it every year,’ the 74year-old says. ‘It was a job. I am fully aware of my obituary — which I hope won’t be for quite some time — “Jesus is dead.” People say: “Do you mind?”, but how can you object? It is lovely to be remembered for something.

‘Many actors spend their entire careers not being remembered for anything. At least I am remembered for one thing.’
