BRI­TAIN’S Oliver Tow­nend pro­duced a record­break­ing dis­play on day one of the dres­sage at the Mit­subishi Mo­tors Bad­minton Horse Tri­als. The world No 3’s mark of 19.7 on Cillnabrad­den Evo beat the record set in 2000 by Aus­tralian An­drew Hoy as he chases the £100,000 top prize. JO KONTA reached her first clay-court ten­nis semi-fi­nal by beat­ing Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-4 at the Morocco Open in Ra­bat. Konta, the world No 47, will play Aus­tralia’s Ajla Toml­janovic in the semi-fi­nals in their third meet­ing of 2019, each hav­ing won one match. HOL­LAND’S Jes­per As­sel­man won the open­ing stage of cy­cling’s Tour de York­shire in a sprint fin­ish af­ter be­ing part of a lon­grange break­away. As­sel­man, 29, held off Ital­ian Filippo Fortin, while Bri­tons Gabriel Cul­laigh and Ethan Hayter came fifth and sixth. Mark Cavendish was eighth.
