Caught on film by Briton, terrifying great white in echo of movie poster

- By Richard Marsden

ANYONE themselves terrifying who poster thinking comforted for that Jaws the was, well, only a movie advert might not want to read on.

For this bone-chilling image is the real deal – a great white shark captured in razor- sharp detail as it rockets out of the depths in pursuit of dinner.

The photograph was taken by 2-year-old London-born Euan Rannachan who, rather wisely, was in a shark cage at the time. Mr Rannachan, who teaches underwater photography in the US, said the 17ft female – nicknamed Squirrel – had been tempted to the surface by 2ft chunks of tuna thrown into the sea as bait by shark ‘wranglers’.

He credited luck and ‘amazing’ water clarity for the shot taken near the island of Guadalupe, 00 miles off the west coast of Mexico.

The father of one said: ‘Usually a shot like this is just slightly off even with my camera shooting seven frames a second, but this picture was perfect.’

He added: ‘The island is on a migration path for elephant and fur seals, that’s why these big mamma sharks come up there to feed.

‘We don’t usually see sharks under 10ft and it’s not rare to see an 18-19ft shark.’
