‘DON’T USE TAP WATER ON YOUR GARDENS’

-

FAMILIES may have to stop using tap water on the garden under radical plans to halve usage.

Regulator Ofwat is warning ‘the way we use water needs to change’ not just during a drought. It has published a strategy to shield supplies in the face of global warming and population rises.

The average person uses about 140 litres a day, but Government experts believe that needs to fall to 100 litres by 2050 and then 70 litres. Ofwat said: ‘Planning for a resilient and affordable water supply is not yet effective.’ The document does not explain how people will be expected to cut their usage.

But Ofwat head Rachel Fletcher and Environment Agency boss Sir James Bevan gave speeches earlier this year saying what they want.

Sir James said: ‘Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth. Don’t water your lawn.’
