GERMANY’S Rick Zabel won a bunch sprint to take the second stage of cycling’s Tour de Yorkshire yesterday. Britain’s Chris Lawless came third, behind Dutchman Boy van Poppel. British duo Andrew Tennant and Dan McLay were fourth and fifth but Mark Cavendish, who seemed well placed, got boxed out.

BRITAIN’S Oliver Townend tightened his grip on the Badminton Horse Trials yesterday with more record-breaking exploits. He still leads on Cillnabradden Evo after completing the dressage stage but is also in second place with Ballaghmor Class. No rider in Badminton’s 70-year history has gone into the pivotal crosscountry phase in the top two positions.
