Rodgers’ Sterling pride

- LAURIE WHITWELL and JACK GAUGHAN

BRENDAN Rodgers has revealed the ambition that drives Raheem sterling by recalling how, aged 17, the then Liverpool winger told him he wanted to be one of the world’s best players. Now Leicester manager, Rodgers says his former charge has fulfilled that mission. The pair are in league opposition for the first time on Monday when Manchester City host Leicester. Rodgers managed sterling at Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, when City bought him for £44million in an acrimonious deal. Rodgers has nothing but fond memories however. ‘What i loved about Raheem was that for a young boy he knew what he wanted to be,’ Rodgers said. ‘i ask young players what is it that they want to achieve. he wanted to be one of the best players in the world — at that age. ‘That was where he was unique, because sometimes the British players may not have that ambition. ‘But he wasn’t just expecting it because of his talent. ‘This was a boy who looked after his body and his life to ensure that he could give himself every chance. he’s taken his game now to a level where he’s clearly one of the best in the world. Off the pitch he’s an incredible kid. ‘he’s very loving and supportive of his family.’ On his departure Rodgers added: ‘For Raheem it was never about money. it was about being the best he can be. And in that moment there was an opportunity to go to City where they had top-class players. he’s developed and become a winner.’
