Pow! Avengers set to smash film record
THE new Avengers superhero blockbuster has become the second-highest grossing film ever made.
Avengers: Endgame earned $2billion (£1.52billion) at the box office 11 days after its release and now looks set to unseat James Cameron’s 2009 hit Avatar as the biggest earner ever.
It took Avatar 47 days to reach the $2billion mark. The Walt Disney Company, which is behind the series of Marvel superhero films – which climax with Endgame – estimated it added £325million over the weekend to reach $2.2billion (£1.67billion). Endgame is one of five movies to reach the $ 2billion threshold, not accounting for inflation.
‘The sprint to $2billion is unbelievable. We’re in uncharted territory,’ said Paul Dergarabedian of data analysts Comscore said: ‘Usually films like this are marathoners.’
Last year Avengers: Infinity War raced to $2billion in 48 days. Star Wars: The Force Awakens took 54 days in 2015.
Titanic from 1997, starring Kate Winslet, grossed just under $2.2billion. But it did not pass the $2billion mark until April 15, 2012, when a 3D version was released to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking.
