Is Pointless the best quiz on television?

-

I, TOO, would like to praise the TV quiz show Pointless (Letters). It is an original programme testing general knowledge while most other quiz programmes are guessing games. The master of ceremonies Alexander Armstrong is well-spoken without being posh and readily puts the competitors at their ease. He also knows the answers to many of the questions without any prompting. When he sometimes gets them wrong, it is proof that, like the competitors, he relies on his general knowledge rather than a script. Bravo for 45 minutes of genuine pleasure.

ANTHONY BARTON, St Julien Beychevelle, France. I MUST agree with former BBC executive Roger Mosey, who complained that the quiz show Pointless often runs seven days a week and asks, is this really what we want for our licence fee (Mail)? The whole point of Pointless is that it’s pointless. Pointless for the contestants, striving to be pointless, but rarely succeeding. Pointless for the viewer, striving to join in, but unable to see the clues on the screen for long enough to take them in. ‘Xander’ gabbles through the clues at breakneck speed, so you need to hit the pause button to decipher them and formulate an answer. Pointless Celebrities is particularly pointless because most of them are. The Pointless presenters Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman are just that, with their patronising, humourless ‘banter’. Most pointless of all? The BBC and its condescending, Left-wing attitude colouring all of its output. Mrs A. RUTH COMBER, Steyning, W. Sussex.
