UPS AND DOWNS

CHAMPIONSHIP

DERBY secured the final play-off place after holding their nerve to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 yesterday. They join Leeds, Aston Villa and West Brom in the battle to make the Premier League. Derby’s victory means

Middlesbrough and Bristol City miss out. However, with 20 minutes remaining it looked as though Derby would be pipped by Boro, who were leading at Rotherham while Frank Lampard’s side were being held 1-1. But Mason Bennett duly delivered for the Rams and Harry Wilson made sure from the penalty spot. Meanwhile, Leeds lost to bottom club Ipswich and are winless in four games, leaving them short of confidence for their play-off semi-final against Derby. West Brom face Aston Villa in the other tie. Norwich sealed the title with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. Sheffield United had to settle for second after drawing at Stoke. Ipswich,

Wigan and Rotherham were relegated.

LEAGUE ONE

LUTON secured the title by beating Oxford 3-1. A brace from George Moncur and a goal from Elliott Lee clinched the trophy ahead of Barnsley. Both sides had started the day level on points but Barnsley lost 2-1 to Bristol Rovers and had to settle for second place.

Doncaster beat Coventry to claim a place in the play-offs alongside Charlton,

Portsmouth and Sunderland. There was drama at the bottom of the table, with Southend and

AFC Wimbledon surviving as a result of having a superior goal difference to Plymouth. Argyle beat Scunthorpe to put them down as well. Southend scored at the death to beat Sunderland, while Wimbledon drew with already-relegated Bradford.

Walsall also went down after drawing at Shrewsbury.

LEAGUE TWO

MK DONS beat Mansfield 1-0 to claim promotion alongside Bury and champions Lincoln after the two sides had started the day level on points. Mansfield now play Newport in the play-offs while Forest Green Rovers take on Tranmere. Notts County, the oldest club in the Football League, were relegated after losing 3-1 to Swindon. Their defeat meant Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield stayed up after a 1-1 draw with Cambridge.
