Guinness does U-turn over nurse’s marathon record

- By Hannah Dawson

AN NHS nurse who was told she was not eligible for a marathon world record because she wasn’t wearing a pinafore has seen the decision overturned.

Guinness World Records (GWR) said its guidelines for the fastest marathon wearing a nurse’s uniform were ‘outdated’ and ‘incorrect’ and have now awarded Jessica Anderson the title.

Miss Anderson, who works at the Royal London Hospital, completed the 26.2 mile course of the London Marathon in three hours, eight minutes and 22 seconds while wearing her work clothes – beating the previous record-holder by 32 seconds.

GWR had told her before the race that her bid would not be considered because she was wearing medical scrubs with trousers – instead of a ‘proper’ nurse’s uniform of a blue or white dress, pinafore apron and cap. Miss Anderson called the rules ‘outdated and quite sexist’.
