HAPPY BIRTHDAY

CANDICE BERGEN, 73. The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning American actress (right) starred in Gandhi and played Carrie Bradshaw’s boss in Sex And The City. As a student, she went on a blind date with a young Donald Trump. She recalls him ‘wearing a burgundy three-piece suit with burgundy patent leather boots, and he was in a burgundy limo, so it was very colour-coordinated’. BILLY JOEL, 70. The singer- songwriter from New York has had hits with Uptown Girl and Just The Way You Are. In 1982, his album 52nd Street, recorded four years earlier, was the first in the world to be released commercially on CD. He still holds concerts, but no longer performs Angry Young Man or Captain Jack as they make him feel ‘burned out’.

BORN ON THIS DAY

ALBERT FINNEY (19362019). The original ‘Angry Young Man’ actor (right) famed for his roles in kitchen sink dramas, died in February. He studied at RADA alongside Peter O’Toole and made his film debut opposite Laurence Olivier. He was nominated for five Oscars, but never won. Asked this year for a quote to go on a statue in his home city Salford, Finney chose one by his character Arthur in Saturday Night And Sunday Morning: ‘I’m out for a good time. Everything else is propaganda.’ SIR JAMES MATTHEW BARRIE (18601937). The Scottish author, better known by the initials JM, created Peter Pan. George Llewelyn Davies — one of four brothers who inspired Barrie’s Peter Pan And The Lost Boys after he met them in London’s Kensington Gardens — was shot in World War I. George’s brother Michael drowned while swimming, and brother Peter killed himself by throwing himself in front of a Tube train.
