‘You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!’ — The Italian Job (1969)

-

THE CONTEXT: Caine plays Charlie Croker, mastermind behind a robbery of gold bullion intended for the Fiat company. As a test, gelignite is rigged up to a van, but destroys the vehicle altogether. Caine delivers the line to actor Frank Jarvis (pictured).

THE TRIVIA: The Italian Job is largely about cars, and in particular, Mini Coopers, in which the crooks make their getaway. Caine, however, hadn’t yet learned to drive. In a further irony, Mini manufacturer BMC refused to donate any cars despite the guaranteed publicity, whereas Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli said he’d give the filmmakers all the vehicles they wanted if they’d replace the Minis with Fiat 500s. They decided a film so quintessentially British that it starred Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill really had to stick with the Mini Cooper.
