LISSIE: When I’m Alone (Cooking Vinyl)

LISSIE MAURUS looks back on her ten-year career by stripping her songs down to just piano and vocals. It’s an odd move from an Illinois singer who impressed as a guitar-toting highway rocker before adding electronics on last year’s excellent Castles. Tepid versions of the 2010 title track and 2016’s Don’t You Give Up On Me fail to play to her strengths, though she fares better on covers of Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams and The Dixie Chicks’ Cowboy Take Me Away.
