Trade war could slash UK prices

-

THOUSANDS of everyday goods could become cheaper in UK stores as Donald Trump ramps up his trade war with China, experts said last night.

Items ranging from electronics to bicycles, pet food and even live fish could have their prices slashed as a glut of Chinese products flood the market.

It comes after President Trump yesterday slapped huge tariffs on £154billion worth of Chinese products despite earlier hopes the countries would resolve trade tensions. In a burst of tweets, Mr Trump insisted the hikes would make the US ‘stronger’ and there was ‘absolutely no need to rush’ through a trade deal.

His comments sent a shudder through global stock markets, with economists warning the growing trade war would hurt both countries’ economies.

But UK trade policy expert Dr Peter Holmes said Chinese exporters would respond by re-routing goods to markets such as the UK, adding: ‘That could have an initial impact of pushing prices down.’
