Winner by a nose, the 249mph bullet train

-

FOR years it has been putting rail networks around the world to shame.

And now Japan has given its already enviable train service a dramatic makeover – complete with a nose job.

The Alfa-X bullet train started test runs yesterday in the north of the country and is set to be the fastest in the world – capable of reaching speeds of up to 249mph. It also boasts an aerodynamic nose stretching 72 feet – around 20 feet longer than a London tube carriage. It is elongated to minimise pressure and noise when passing through tunnels. Other features include specialist equipment to reduce the impact of earthquake tremors.

It is not due to enter service until 2030 where it will be restricted to a maximum speed of 224mph.

Regular test runs will take place until March 2022.
