We had help from parents but STILL had to refinance home

- By Science Correspondent

COLLETTE and David Pemberton worked six-day weeks and borrowed from their parents to pay for private IVF treatment.

But facing a bill of £25,000, they were forced to remortgage their house too.

The couple, who married in 2015, took out an extra £8,000 loan on their semidetached £175,000 home in the Wirral to fund their fertility treatment.

Mrs Pemberton said: ‘We had no choice at all but to extend the mortgage. It sometimes feels like it will never end ... the stress of not knowing if you will have a child is enough without knowing you’re facing years of debt as well.’ The beautician, 32, has endometriosis, a painful gynaecological condition that can make it harder to conceive naturally.

She also has a low ‘ovarian reserve’, meaning there are fewer good-quality eggs to be fertilised.

In 2017 the couple had their first round of IVF, which cost £6,000. They travelled to Spain for tests and last year paid £4,500 for more treatment. The couple said their bill after further IVF will reach £25,000.

Lab technician Mr Pemberton, 30, said: ‘The money stress of this process is big.’
